VEET successful plank of Victoria’s new climate change framework, 6 Feb 2017

Media Release

The Victorian Energy Efficiency Target (VEET) scheme is a critical part of that state’s action on climate as detailed in Victoria’s Climate Change Framework released on 29 January 2017.

The Framework emphasises a “positive, orderly and just” transition and refers to the strengthening of the VEET scheme in 2017 as a primary plank of transformational energy policy.

“The Energy Efficiency Certificate Creators Association (EECCA) commends the Victorian Government on its ongoing leadership in this space, and of recognising the VEET’s pivotal success in delivering transformational energy efficiency and productivity.

“We look forward to working further with the Victorian Government to expand the VEET scheme beyond current eligible incentivised activities for businesses and households. The addition of a new project-based activities methodology scheduled for 2017 promises further critical impact on energy efficiency targets.

“This new methodology will enable a broader range of activities such as large industrial equipment upgrades to be included in the VEET. This will enable more businesses to participate in the scheme, including those currently excluded which participated in Environment and Resource Efficiency Plans (EREP) progam from 2008 to 2013. These sites comprise a significant proportion of electricity consumed in Victoria. The EECCA would welcome all of these sites being eligible to participate and to benefit from the project-based methodology.

“The closure of Hazelwood coal-fired power station in Victoria has put additional pressure on wholesale power prices. Expansion of VEET activities and targets are a low risk solution to combat this reality.

“We also commend the Victorian Government on its commitment to increasing access to the VEET for vulnerable households, announced 30 January 2017,” Mr McGovern concluded.
